In addition to streamers and fireworks, the new year is occasioned by another tradition: new laws. Several new laws affecting Oregon contractors and developers took effect on January 1, 2016.
Paid sick leave: Most Oregon construction employers must now provide employees with one hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked. Employees must be allowed to earn and use up to 40 hours of paid sick leave per year. More information can be found here.
Marijuana: Although recreational use of marijuana is now decriminalized under Oregon law, not much has changed for employers. More information can be found here.
Ban the box: It’s now illegal for most employers to ask employment applicants about their criminal history on employment applications or before an initial interview. More information can be found here.
These changes are likely the first of many new developments relevant to your business this year. As always, continue to follow Ahead of Schedule for important updates on emerging issues throughout the year!
